Hi there vapers and interested people.

I don't think there is any need to introduce ourselves, the avatar makes it pretty obvious, but if you hate acronyms as much as I do and wilfully refuse to figure out what things stand for like I do, we are the New Nicotine Alliance Australia. :)

So straight to business! In response to rumblings that some supporters feel uninformed about what the NNA AU is up to, and in the interest of transparency we have started this thread so that people can ask questions, give feedback and keep up with the activities of the NNA. It's also a place for us to make updates and keep supporters informed about what we are working on and what's happening in the world of advocacy.

So go ahead, ask away, or just tell us what you think. We'll do our best to respond but bear in mind we are only three people and two of us have full time jobs, so don't hate us too much if it takes a day to respond.

I will be posting up a summary of the minutes of a board meeting that was held last night, but that will be later today after work.

For a start the name of the person responding on behalf of the NNA.au at the end of each post would be good.

Just to keep it sort of human and transparent.

I guess my question is then "what are you working on?" and "what is happening in the world of advocacy (in Australia)?"

Good idea. The OP was written by me, Jen. :)

I think most of the posts here will be me, but I'll let Donna and Attila know to sign off with their name when they post. Otherwise, assume it's me. Jen. The 'blonde' one. With the big mouth.

    To briefly answer your first question;
    • Contacting worldwide experts in the field to make sure they know about our submission to the TGA and encouraging them to write in support of our application
    • Attending a meeting with the Executive Director, Population Health New South Wales along with some other departmental people on the 13th September to discuss the RCP report and our application to the TGA.
    • Finalising the details of sending Ange to Sydney to give a talk with Dr Mendelsohn to 40 nurses about ecigs.
    • Trying to find and hire a web developer to sort out our website
    • Working on a NNA submission in support of the proposed legalisation of ecigs in NZ
    • Attila is liaising with Aaron Biebert to try to bring A Billion Lives to as many capital cities in Australia as possible
    • Working with overseas consumer advocates to formalise an international coalition of consumer advocate groups and trying to find an Australian representative for this group.
    • Liaising with friendly pollies in Vic parliament about the finer details and potential outcome of Thursday's vote on the Victorian tobacco amendment bill.
    • Having discussions about increasing the NNA board to 4 or 5 people if possible.
There's probably quite a few other smaller things in process that I've forgotten about, but if I've forgotten something important I'll post about it when I'm reminded.

As for your second question, it's too big to answer here! I could manage any specifics you come up with though. :)

So we held a board meeting last night, it had been a while since we'd managed to get together....timing it is always difficult. This is a brief summary of the minutes:

    1. Procure a web developer as a matter of urgent priority to fix the website so that we can regularly update it, publish articles, post up minutes of meetings, and whatever else goes onto websites...I forget. Happy to pay for it if a reasonable 'mates rates' kind of quote is received. This is a priority as it's a necessity to address concerns about lack of communication and transparency, and is also our main connection with supporters who are not involved in other vaping social media.

    2. In the mean time we decided to ask Ange's permission to create a VCA account for the NNA and start a dedicated public NNA chat type thread to respond to feedback, make regular updates about whatever is being worked on, take suggestions and answer questions about what we are doing. The three of us would ideally have access and respond with the NNA account.

    3. We all agreed it was a good idea to enlarge the board, preferably to 5 people for voting purposes but 4 would still be an improvement. Acknowledged the difficulty of finding two more good people, with skills to offer, available, have enough time on their hands, and be a good fit. It was decided to put out a call for anyone who is willing to seriously commit to the responsibility to contact us. All names in the hat (if any :() will be considered by the three of us and a decision will be made about who to invite at the next board meeting if possible.

    4. We committed to regular monthly meetings, or when not possible no more than 6wks between meetings. To taking proper minutes and then posting a summary of them on the website, and/or the public VCA thread.

    5. Discussed current efforts overseas to form the international organisation of consumer advocate groups. Donna has been contacted asking for suggestions for an Australian representative. We agreed that none of the three of us were able to take on that role and decided to put a call out for anyone who feels they could take it on to please let us know.

So to add to that I would like to reiterate that we are looking for potential additions to the board. If you are a person who feels they can fully commit to that and have some skills to offer and the time to commit please let us know by sending us a private message here, or via the contact on the website (as far as I know it does work.)

If you are a person who feels they can commit to being the Australian representative to be involved in the currently forming International coalition of consumer advocates please also contact us.

And if you are a web developer, or know one, who is willing to take on the project of our website and is prepared to charge us a reasonable price (obviously we are not rich), so sort of 'mates rates', then please, please, please get in touch. The website has been a major headache for us from the start and is also now a bit of an embarrassment.

This is a really good idea guys, sadly I don't feel I would have the reliability required for either of those positions at the moment but would urge anyone who is interested to put their name in the hat.

    Thanks Nico.

One thing's for sure, we have a real shortage of manpower and Donna has been doing the lion's share of the hard grind from the start.

I doubt I'd even know 2% of what @Donna has done & currently does for the NNA AU & us vapers, yet still I'm amazed at the huge effort she puts in.

Just another little update; this seems to be as good a place as any, it's not directly NNA but probably interesting to some. I'm involved as a consumer advisor as well as medical supervisor in an upcoming multi-site study (including Australia) on relapse prevention using vaping, with Ron Borland, Hayden McRobbie, Riccardo Polosa, Coral Gartner and more. It's taking ages to get going, these things always do. Anyway, we had a teleconference meeting tonight; the study will probably start early next year, we will be trialling some flavours to decide which will be best, and I may recruit a few people from here to try out some e-juices from Ireland that apparently have enough certification and standards to satisfy the Ethics committee. We are limited in the trial to probably a choice of 2 flavors. I was thinking a sort-of tobacco flavor like RY4 plus some sort of sweet/fruit flavor. There will be vapers in the UK trying them out too. It's a bit tricky, because this will be for newbie vapers, and we know our tastes have changed. But we'll have to come to some sort of decision regardless.

I just wanted to say more about this because I'm excited about it. :bounce:

Dr Colin Mendelsohn is a well respected tobacco treatment specialist from Sydney. http://colinmendelsohn.com.au/ He's been outspoken in the media lately about the benefits of vaping for smokers and is a great ally to vapers.

Ange....well, Ange is Ange. lol! Just kidding , Angela is a registered nurse and the owner of this forum, as well as being a tireless fighter for vaping in Australia and an associate of the NNA. http://www.nnalliance.org.au/about-us/associates

So anyway, Dr Mendelsohn is giving a presentation on e-cigs to the Respiratory Nurses Interest Group NSW (http://www.rnig.org.au/events.html) in Burwood, Sydney on Wednesday 12 October. He has 60 minutes to speak and has offered to give 20 mins of his time to Angela to speak. So he'll talk from a medical point of view and show some devices to the group. Ange will tell her story and demonstrate some different mods, from cigalikes to gen3s and explain the difference and how they all work. She will also be able to speak about the benefits of switching to vaping for people with COPD etc from a nursing point of view.

The talk could potentially influence the views of a few hundred medical professionals in Sydney as the nurses who attend are likely to share what they learn. Our hope is that taking advantage of opportunities like this to educate people on the ground is a way of slowly correcting the misinformation spread by prohibitionist tobacco control organisations who are opposed to vaping and tobacco harm reduction.

Wonderful, yes its a little tricky choosing flavors because when many of us started vaping we needed a tobacco flavour to help us quit, these days many seem to switch to Vaping with sweet flavors, I am wondering if its age related? or is it all about the change in personal Vaporisers? I guess the study will enlighten.

I'd love to attend as well, if only to meet Dr Mendelsohn in person, but it sounds like I'd be very much a third wheel. It seems the nurses will be in good hands with Collin and Angela. :)

He lives in Sydney T.V., and I've no doubt you'll have the opportunity to meet him some day. He's pretty active. It was decided it would be good to have a nurse speak to other nurses on this occasion. I know the indoctrination spell they're often under. :)
