Thoughts on a Sheet Metal MOD Enclosure?

As some of you know by now, I work for a large manufacturing company in Sydney. We have a large CNC sheet metal shop that specialises in Stainless steel fabrication.

I have a mate that is a very talented welder, who is adept in SS sheet welding. He has offered to fabricate me a bespoke enclosure, if I would design it, and I'm considering accepting his offer.

Now a rectangular box doesn't take a lot of design skill, and I am quite capable of drilling any holes or cutouts after it is complete.

But do I go for a "hammond" style, rectangular box? A "C-frame" type of affair, with a sleeve, (which might not need any welding at all)? Or something completely different?

The "door" is also giving me a headache, or rather, the method of closure. I'm not sure I would be happy with just epoxying on some magnets.

    Thoughts?

I just had the thought that "checkerplate" might make for cool looking side panels.

But the design logistics, well, those escape me. It'd certainly raise electrical insulation issues amongst others. :)

Yeah.... but incorporating it into a mod? Well, good luck with that! :)

One option could be 'C frame' with wood milled out for fitments and it would be a mix of solid wood and SS, I like the look of them personally.

Agree a design closer to that Ruinovo's curves over a hard edged 'box' would be nicer 'in the hand'.

For the magnet attachments, have you seen the spot-weld options out there?
You could find a suitably sized 'cup' that could be tigged or spotted to a battery cover then the magnet can get epoxied into that, hiding the epoxy with a nice clean look.

Regulated or mech box & if regulated which chip?
You need to know what is going inside, to get the inner dimensions right, then worry about aesthetics.

Yep. And it does look good on the sides of a mod, doesn't it?
